Attention: Dogs freeze faster than you think!

Many people believe that dogs are automatically well protected from the cold by their fur. This is something we hear time and again. However, our own experience with Lucy has shown us something different.
Lucy is very small, very sensitive to the cold, and reacts particularly sensitively during the cold season. Early on, we noticed that cold can often be much more burdensome for small dogs than many people assume. Especially wind, moisture, and cold ground make a much bigger difference than one might initially think from the outside.
It is from this everyday experience with Lucy that our perspective on the topic has emerged. Not from theory, but from personal experience.
Why many dogs react so sensitively to the cold
Not every dog is naturally robust against the cold. Especially small dogs lose heat significantly faster. Short-haired dogs or animals with very little undercoat are additionally less protected. Older dogs or dogs with health issues often react more sensitively as well.
Adding to this are wind and moisture. Even a dog with denser fur can cool down quickly when moisture and cold air come together. It is often very clear at that point that a walk becomes strenuous for the dog: it starts to shiver, moves more stiffly, or doesn’t want to walk any further.
From our experience, this is not a marginal issue, but a very real everyday problem for many small dogs.
What we have learned with Lucy
With Lucy, we saw very early on how much cold can affect the well-being of a small dog. When a dog is cold, not only does the walk change, but often the entire demeanor: more tension, less joy in movement, less lightness.
That is why it quickly became clear to us that functional dog clothing can be much more than just a nice extra. It can be an important contribution to better protect sensitive dogs in everyday life and to provide them with more comfort and safety, especially in the cold season.
Lucy & Fly has grown out of exactly this experience: from the desire to develop solutions that not only look good but truly make a difference in everyday life.
Why functional dog clothing can make a real difference
When dog clothing is well thought out, it protects not only the back but also sensitive areas like the belly, chest, and legs. It is precisely there that many dogs lose heat particularly quickly.
For us, the value of functional dog clothing lies not in a fashion effect, but in what it can achieve in everyday life: more protection from cold and moisture, more joy in movement, more well-being, and often much more relaxed walks.
Especially for small, short-haired, or particularly sensitive dogs, this is not a trivial matter. It is a conscious decision for more protection and a better quality of life.
A conscious investment in well-being and health
Yes, high-quality dog clothing is an investment. For us, however, it is much more than just a purchase of fabric and design.
It is an investment in protection, in comfort, and in a daily life that is more pleasant for the dog and more relaxing for its humans. When a dog is less cold, it often moves more freely, prefers to stay outside, and appears overall more comfortable.
That is why we do not see functional dog clothing as a fashion topic, but as thoughtful support for dogs that need more protection in the cold season.
