What our dog clothing can do in wet conditions

This question is asked of us time and again:
Is our dog clothing really waterproof?
At Lucy & Fly, we use high-quality, water-repellent and weatherproof fabrics, including softshell. Our models are designed to protect your dog very well from moisture, wind, and cool weather.
At the same time, it is important for us to be clear and honest:
Our dog clothing is not hermetically waterproof.
This means that in heavy rain, prolonged moisture, or high splashing pressure, moisture can gradually penetrate through the seams over time. Especially for dogs with very short legs, the proximity to the wet ground is particularly significant. In such cases, it is not always possible to completely prevent water from reaching the more sensitive areas of the material.
Our honest view on this
It is important for us not to create false expectations.
Our dog clothing is made for protection, comfort, and everyday usability. It provides very good protection in cool and wet weather, but it should not be equated with fully sealed specialized clothing.
That is why proper care, gentle drying, and a conscious approach to the material play an important role.
What you should do after a wet walk
If the dog clothing has gotten wet, please let it dry completely in the air first.
It is best to hang the model normally first so that the outside can dry peacefully. Once it is dry, you can turn the garment inside out to ensure the inside dries completely as well.
Please do not use a dryer or direct strong heat sources for this. We always recommend gentle air drying.
Because only when the material is completely dry can it be treated meaningfully afterwards.
How you can further support the moisture protection
Some customers have shared helpful experiences with us over time on how to further support moisture protection in everyday life.
One possible way is to treat the outer fabrics and seams with a suitable impregnation spray.
It is important to note:
- The dog clothing must be completely dry beforehand.
- The material should have dried peacefully in the air.
- Only then can an additional impregnation be meaningfully applied.
A practical tip from a customer's experience
A customer also advised us that she had good experiences with horse blankets by lightly warming the completely dried material with a hairdryer before impregnation.
It is important to not work with hot air, but only with a mild, warm hairdryer setting. The material should become pleasantly warm, but not hot at all. Excessive heat can unnecessarily stress sensitive fabrics and especially the membrane of softshell materials.
Once the dog clothing is evenly lightly warmed, the impregnation spray can be quickly applied. Afterwards, the product should dry again peacefully and air out well.
What is important to us
We consciously do not make a specific recommendation for a particular impregnation spray. If you are looking for a suitable product, we recommend that you inform yourself specifically or seek expert advice.
It is more important for us to explain honestly how you can handle the material sensibly than to make hasty general product promises.
Why proper care is so crucial here
Especially with weatherproof fabrics, it is not only about whether a material generally protects, but also about how it is treated in everyday life.
Gentle drying, moderate washing, and careful maintenance contribute significantly to ensuring that protective function and material quality are maintained for as long as possible.
This is not a minor issue for us, but an important part of the product.
If you have questions, we are happy to help
If you have questions about care, drying, or additional impregnation, I am of course very happy to assist you.
And if we receive further helpful experiences or practical tips from our customers, we will gladly share them with you in the future.
Best regards,
Nataly from Lucy & Fly
